SYNOPSIS

Most can only fantasize about owning and living in beautiful dream homes designed by top architects. At a million dollars and up, these houses are well beyond the reach of typical consumers. This splendidly illustrated volume promises to provide a reality check by presenting beautifully designed houses by some of the same architects, but with one exception. The houses in this book were designed and built for clients with high design and construction standards but with modest budgets: construction costs were held to $100–$200 per-square-foot.

Fifteen in-depth case studies display the work of Scott Guyon, Stephen Erlich, Sands Architects, Robert Gurney, and others in locations ranging from California, North Carolina, and Connecticut, to Virginia, Kentucky, Oregon, and more. Each project includes lavish interior and exterior photography accompanied by floor plans, sections, elevations, and site plans, and discusses the economical design techniques implemented. The square footage cost and the construction and design techniques, as well as the building materials used that allowed for the lower cost are given for each house, allowing readers to incorporate this information into the planning of their own homes.
